It’s that time of the year again – Overwatch’s Summer Games are here, and fans are excited. Lucioball is a definite fan favourite of course. Ever since its debut, players have loved the event – almost as much as they love the epic event skins that Blizzard offers during the Summer Games.
If you’re unfamiliar with Lucioball, it’s a game mode where players enter a 3v3 soccer match…of sorts. In order to win, you have to score more goals than your opponent of course, but the details are a bit different. For one, the white, grey and yellow ball is almost as big as the players are, and you don’t kick it around, but rather use a unique type of weapon to knock it around.
It’s great fun and you should definitely give it a try if you haven’t yet! This time there’s even an added incentive: Where before, the game was entirely casual, there is a competitive mode this time! Playing 10 games earns you your placement as well as some competitive points.
Lucioball also counts towards your Arcade loot boxes. Three wins will give you one loot boxes, meaning there are three to be earned in about an hour if you play well (or more if you level up).
Now, in order to win though, you’ll need to employ certain strategies.
1. Goalies rule
There are three spawn positions in the game – the person spawning in the middle is responsible for guarding the goal. In normal football games, this would be a rather boring position, but not in this game. You can make some great plays from here, so don’t be tempted to abandon the goal, even for just a moment – an empty goal WILL be dunked upon.
2. Silence is golden
You probably know what we mean – your teammates. It’s not rare to find that Lucioball gets people excited, and that often goes hand in hand with loud and unnecessary curses. Don’t be shy about muting annoying players. You don’t need the distraction. This play-mode is less serious than ‘typical’ plays, so it’s not uncommon to come across trolls – don’t mind them and carry on.
3. Use your skills
You have three of them: Lucio’s melee attack is great for short passes, it has no cooldown and it’ll get you pretty far. Soundwave does have a cooldown but it can make the ball soar like you wouldn’t believe – don’t be shy to bump the ball as soon as it drops so that your enemies can’t even get to it. That alone can make the difference for a game!
Your ultimate boosts you: It makes you go faster, jump higher and it reduces Soundwave’s cooldown. Don’t forget to use your skills just because this isn’t a ‘regular’ game mode!
4. Jump!
Unlike normal, boring soccer fields, Lucioball comes with some neat features. One of them is the jumping pads. They give you a speed boost and bump you high in the air – as far as vertical mobility goes, these things are epic. Use them to catch high shots so that enemies can’t get the ball past you. Unless you’re the goalie – if you are, steer clear of the pads because once you’re in the air, that’s it, the net is wide open. Guard around the pad and only use it when you’re sure that you’ll need it.
With these tips you should be able to net yourself a pretty good placement in the competitive mode, so enjoy the perks that come with it – Blizzard really was generous there this year! You can play Lucioball until the 30th of August.
